Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Reduce Heart Disease when Combined with Statins

Omega-3 fatty acids exert several beneficial cardiovascular effects. In the Japan Eicosapentaenoic Acid Lipid Intervention Study (JELIS), patients with total cholesterol levels greater than 250 mg/dL were randomized to either eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which is an omega-3 fatty acid plus a statin or statin monotherapy. At mean follow-up of 4.6 years, 3.5% of patients taking statin only experienced a major CHD event compared with 2.8% of patients taking combination therapy, with a relative risk reduction of 19% in the latter group.
